Jeff Burgess Memorial Scholarship
Fund Background: Established in 2010 by friends and family along with a gift from the Lignite Energy Council and its members. The Jeff Burgess Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to financially assist graduating high school seniors from Burleigh, McClean, Mercer, Morton, or Oliver counties to continue their post-secondary education. Preference will be given to students who plan to pursue a science-related education.
Jeff died on September 26, 2009 as a result of a car accident. He joined the Lignite Energy Council in September 2001, and served as director of research and development along with serving as the technical representative to the North Dakota Industrial Commission. Prior to joining the Lignite Energy Council, he was the division director of air quality at the North Dakota Department of Health where he worked for 24 years.
A native of Bismarck and a 1971 graduate of Bismarck High School, Jeff earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from North Dakota State University, a master’s degree in environmental engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and a master’s in public administration from the University of North Dakota.
Eligibility Requirements: Preference will be given to students who exhibit the following characteristics:

- respect for others
- honesty
- dependability
- and plan to pursue a science related education

Students must have a GPA of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0=A scale.
